Today class began at 10am so we got up early and made the quick stroll to the station for our bus at 8.50am. Today we were given a creative project which involved the class creating bands, writing a song and performing it for the class afterwards. I was grouped with my two Erasmus friends, Áindle and Dj and we set to work.
We had an hour and a half! We went through different ideas, using different chords and riffs. I sang and we played it for the class, as well as listening to all the others perform. After this we had a class reflecting on the importance of the live set up in a gig. From here we created a list of all the equipment and resources you'd need for a live gig. Overall I really enjoyed today and you can really see how enthusiastic the lecturers are about music and the progress of their students. I came away feeling very confident and motivated after todays performance. -Jessica

Things are getting more intense at the campus now, so exciting! We have been working with some great supervisors and they have been showing us how to operate different audio desks and set up, re-amp and record electric guitar and this gave a good insight into how a studio really functions as a business. Even one of the technicians took time out of his day to help us set up and record, when we were given free reign of one of the many studios they have. All we had to do was ask about something we are interested in and explain why it would be good for us to learn and they would shrug and say “why not?” Amazing people and a marvellous day… Oh, did I mention it was only the third day out of three weeks!
Stay warm, Devon Earl Harris Today was the first time we would have to organise our own transport to and from the college. We bought tickets for the 240X bus hosted by Stuart Coaches. The journey was relatively brief and the bus driver was incredibly helpful. He dropped us off at the stop just a short distance from the college and we walked the remainder of the way. In Motherwell ,we continued on with the work we had been assigned yesterday. We had to organise and structure original pieces of music.
We were given a rehearsal room to practice in and there were a variety of instruments at our disposal. Afterwards the whole class went into the main campus hall and we were treated to a charity performance in aid of SamH, a mental health awareness charity. We then had our lunch. I made lunch earlier in the morning using the kitchen in our apartment. Having the in house kitchen is really useful and we've been cooking all sorts of meals. We finished off the day by watching a documentary on rave music, which coincidentally lined up with my previous project that I completed for GTI which was also on rave culture. -Áindle Hey everyone... I’m Thady, and right off the bat, Happy International Pancake Day! And what other way to start the day then, well, a pancake.
After my pancakes, Devon and Aaron (my classmates from GTI) and myself, went down to the bus stop and made our way to the college. We met with Andreas, where we were talking all about different microphones and frequencies, we also got to watch a small bit of a documentary on sound from the BBC. It went over sound pressure and fundamental frequencies of different metals, such as the Big Ben bell in London. After Andreas’s class, we went down to one of the colleges incredible recording studios and got to look over another DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and learnt how to set it up. We set the DAW up for a drum set which was super interesting, because even though we learnt how to do it with Brian in GTI, we really loved doing it here in New College Lanarkshire as they use different techniques, and I found it interesting the way they approach it. At 1pm, we had an hour lunch and we were back in for 2pm, at which point we met another teacher named David. We introduced ourselves to him and then finished up the mic setup before continuing to set up the DAW. We set the levels for the various instruments, and then we decided to think of a song to record which we discussed among the class. Afterwards, we decided to put a bit of guitar into the mix, which was actually more complicated than expected, but that’s good because it means I learnt something. When we decided on a song and learnt it, it was already 3.30pm, which meant it was time to pack up everything and head back home... unfortunately. When we got home, we went to the shop to get a few bits for dinner, which was, of course...pancakes! We invited the music students down to our apartment and we got to sit around and play some cards and have a chat which was lovely! -Thady Today we visited the different campuses that each of the separate groups will be attending for the next three weeks. We will be attending the Cumbernauld campus, however we first stopped off at the Motherwell campus for an introduction with those responsible for organising our Erasmus+ trip. Afterwards we got a coach to the Cumbernauld campus where we saw many studio spaces and multiple radio rooms and participated in classroom activities. We met with our radio broadcasting supervisor Javed and he explained our first radio project, which involved us recording a radio show or podcast as a group. Afterwards we met with our audio and video supervisor Ali, and he introduced us to the class and also gave us a run down on Pro tools for our project which includes us recording foley and adding effects to a movie clip with no audio. Overall today was very informative and we look forward to getting started on some of the projects.
-Aaron Today was primarily an induction day into our respective campuses in the New College Lanarkshire. After taking a bus to Motherwell campus from the Glasgow Lofts, we were brought to a boardroom where we filled out a form with various details for our placement. Once we had filled these forms and had a short talk from some of the staff at the college, we were split into our separate course groups and eventually lead off. Here we were introduced to some of the local tutors we'll be working with throughout our placement.
After our brief introductions to our tutors, one of them named Stuart brought us to a rehearsal room and gave us a very snappy lesson on song structure. As soon as our short lesson was over, he had us put this theory into action and actually write a song with a full awareness to planning the song out. We were left to our own devices with our instruments in hand at this point, with Stuart occasionally popping in from the other class to hear what we had, provide hints, tips and pointers, and to help us set up some other equipment in the room. Around the 1pm mark we were sent away to get some lunch, or "scran" as our classmates call it. When leaving the rehearsal room we encountered some other fellow music students coming out of another rehearsal room and introduced themselves. We spent lunch socialising with them and having the craic trying to learn some of the local lingo. Afterwards we returned to class, only to be told we've still got a song to finish. We bid farewell to our classmates and ventured back into the rehearsal room. When 3:15pm rolled around we were released for the day to catch our scheduled bus back, and once aboard we enjoyed a long drive across to the Cumbernauld campus to collect the sound production students. From there we returned to the Glasgow Lofts for the evening. For dinner, Devon cooked up a heavenly stir-fry for both the sound production and music students, and after eating we stayed in the apartment for banter, and to share and trade our stories from the day. -DJ When arriving in Glasgow, I think we were all very excited but I didn't expect it to be as great as it is. I have never felt so inspired by a city, it is absolutely beautiful. The apartments have a fantastic view right in the centre of the city where you can hear the music on the streets through the windows everyday, it's really nice. With all of this it makes me very excited to begin my first day of my placement tomorrow. I am excited to meet everyone at the campus and to hear about what kind of music they love to listen to and create. I am excited to learn new things from our hosts, such as music theory and different music techniques. Despite it only being the first full day, I already feel very musically inspired in this new environment. I look forward to our schedule in the college and I'm particularly excited for the creative project. From this experience I hope to meet new people who have the same interests as I do in the course, I also look forward to expanding my mind and creating new music.
Below I have attached a photo of the Erasmus group. Today, on our free day, we explored the city and also figured out the best bus route for us to get to college everyday. We looked at the times, and checked out prices and figured out what suited our timetables. I feel confident now that we familiarised ourselves with the bus route. I look forward to blogging my whole experience, sharing what I've learned. Glasgow has such an amazing music scene and I can't wait to immerse myself in the culture. -Jessica Deegan Day one, wow, I can’t believe how wonderful it has already been since arriving in Glasgow. What a beautiful apartment, a bright and sun filled sky and great company to explore the the city centre with. The amount of buskers and performers in the streets are a reminder of Galway but on a much grander scale, and only in the best of ways. There is just about everything near the apartment and anything else, well, I wouldn’t say no to a walk around to explore! Tomorrow, our placement begins with a tour around the campus and an introduction to the hosts, orienting us for the weeks of work to follow. All in all, an absolutely great start to an amazing opportunity... As for the rest, well, stay tuned!
